Fluoride

Treatments Protect and Strengthen Your Teeth

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that strengthens teeth, protecting them from decay. The government adds fluoride to public drinking water to give the population a boost to their dental health, but the trace amounts of fluoride received through this method is not always enough to achieve the desired results. This is why the Brewer Dental Center team offers topical fluoride treatment. This is a more direct means of obtaining fluoride to build stronger teeth and gums.

DOES IT REALLY WORK?

You’ve probably been consuming fluoride for years and didn’t even know it. Some people become concerned when they learn they’ve been taking fluoride without realizing it, but aside from rare cases of discoloration caused by excessive fluoride exposure, there are no drawbacks to fluoride use and the benefit to teeth is invaluable.

Montana has had an interesting history with fluoride use. When certain communities discovered fluoride was being put in their water, they petitioned to have it removed—they were upset it was being added to the water and false rumors about fluoride began circulating. As a result, tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease became much more rampant problems in some areas. Dentists across the nation agree that systemic fluoride in the drinking water is a major benefit for the community.

TOPICAL FLUORIDE TREATMENT

Topical fluoride treatment at the Brewer Dental office is quick and easy. The dentist will apply the fluoride as a gel or foam to the teeth, let it sit a few minutes, and then rinse it off. You will need to abstain from eating or drinking for thirty minutes so your teeth can absorb the fluoride. Most people do not need fluoride treatments very often, but people who are prone to tooth decay may need them every six to 12 months.
